Professional golfer Brooks Koepka reveals that his departure from the PGA Tour was solely due to the irresistible contract he received from rival LIV Golf.
In an intriguing conversation with BS w/ Jake Paul, Koepka shed light on the merger between LIV Golf, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, and the PGA Tour. He also discussed his decision to leave the PGA for LIV.
While Koepka didn’t disclose specific figures, he confirmed that the deal was enormous.
“It was good,” Koepka grinned when asked about the contract by Paul.
Pressed for more details on the monetary value, Koepka simply replied, “It was nine (figures),” suggesting that the deal was worth at least $100 million.
Koepka further revealed that many players were inspired to join LIV thanks to fellow golfer Phil Mickelson, who vocally demanded improved player rights.
“To be honest, I signed for the dough,” Koepka continued. “I’m fully supportive of that. Tomorrow, I could be in a car accident and never play golf again, but my family will be taken care of. That was a crucial consideration for me.”
Regarding the merger between LIV and the PGA, Koepka disclosed that players, like the general public, are eagerly awaiting further details.
“I have as much knowledge as anyone else,” he remarked. “It’s a merger. That’s all I know. Hopefully, there’ll be a new (company) where all the world’s top players can come together, and everyone can witness them all in one week, in one event, instead of things being so fragmented.”
