Previews of Inland college football games Saturday, Oct. 21 – Press Enterprise

Inland college football teams played exciting games on Saturday, Oct. 21. Let’s take a closer look:

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Redlands (4-2, 3-1) at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (5-1, 3-1), 1 p.m.

Game info: In October, Redlands suffered a one-point loss to Pomona-Pitzer but made a strong comeback with a 20-10 victory over Cal Lutheran to retain the Smudge Pot trophy. Led by graduate student Jack Wilson at quarterback, the Bulldogs scored 17 points in the second quarter and secured the win. Vicente Garcia, who had some struggles against Pomona-Pitzer, redeemed himself by making two field goals (33 and 40 yards) against Cal Lu. CMS is hoping to repeat last season’s 42-0 shutout over Redlands and extend their winning streak in the series. The Stags had an impressive performance from running back Justin Edwards, who recorded 227 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-17 victory over La Verne in the previous week.

Pomona-Pitzer (3-3, 2-2) at La Verne (1-5, 0-4), 1 p.m.

Game info: After a narrow win against Redlands on Oct. 7, Pomona-Pitzer suffered a 21-0 loss to Chapman in Week 7. Quarterback Nick Kim had a decent performance, completing 27 of 41 passes for 250 yards, but faced heavy pressure and was sacked five times. The Sagehens struggled on the ground, finishing with minus-30 net rushing yards on 10 attempts, while Chapman’s strong running game accumulated 315 yards. La Verne has faced four consecutive losses and has struggled to gain yards and points this season. Quarterback Nick Garcia has thrown four touchdowns but also has nine interceptions.

AMERICAN-METRO CONFERENCE

Chaffey (6-0, 1-0) at Desert (4-2, 1-0), 1 p.m.

Game info: Chaffey’s running back Jayson Cortes continues to lead Southern California in rushing yards per game with an average of 125.2. In their last game, a dominating 62-0 victory over West L.A., quarterback Deruen Dortch had an impressive performance, completing 13 of 18 passes for 238 yards and four touchdowns. Receiver William Davis made a significant contribution with two touchdown receptions and 142 yards on five catches. Chaffey has been scoring prolifically, averaging over 48 points per game and winning two games with a score of 62 points. Desert won their league opener against Compton via forfeit, and in their last game on Sept. 30, they lost 50-42 to L.A. Southwest in their homecoming game.

NATIONAL-CENTRAL CONFERENCE

Golden West (5-1, 3-0) at San Bernardino Valley (1-5, 0-3), 1 pm.

Game info: SBVC faced another tough loss, suffering a 42-7 defeat against Citrus in Week 7. The Wolverines have struggled defensively, allowing over 40 points per game against National-Central League opponents, and their offense has struggled to produce, averaging only 11 points over the last three games. Running back Antoine Fowler has shown promise with an average of 6.0 yards per carry. However, the challenge continues as they face Golden West, one of the top teams in Southern California. Golden West’s only loss this season was against Riverside in Week 2, and they have since won four consecutive games, scoring a season-high 58 points in a victory over Orange Coast last week.

NATIONAL-SOUTHERN CONFERENCE

Mt. San Jacinto (1-5, 1-2) at San Diego Mesa (3-3, 1-2), 6 p.m.

Game info: Mt. San Jacinto got their first win of the season in the National-Southern League last week, totaling over 500 yards on offense. Quarterback Zach Zella had an outstanding performance, completing 22 of 29 passes for 305 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. Running back Matthew Caldera made a significant contribution with 93 yards on 14 carries. Can MSJC build on this win and secure another victory for the first time since the 2021 season? San Diego Mesa’s quarterback James Odom and receiver Kader Diop have been a dynamic duo, combining for nearly a touchdown per game. However, Mesa is coming off a 27-14 loss to unbeaten Fullerton.

Riverside (6-0, 3-0) at Southwestern (0-6, 0-3), 6 p.m.

Game info: Riverside’s quarterback Jordan Barton had a record-breaking performance in their last game, throwing for 460 yards and a 98-yard touchdown pass in a 63-0 victory. Barton leads the National-Southern League and the Southern California Football Association in passing yards per game (325.8) and completion percentage (72.6). Riverside’s defense also had an impressive shutout, their first since the 2019 championship season. The Tigers look to continue their strong defensive performance against winless Southwestern. Lenza Robinson’s 38 catches highlight the Panthers, but they have struggled this season, losing by an average of 39 points per game.
