Premier League referees urged to crackdown on new rule after Liverpool star was penalised

PGMOL chief Howard Webb is calling on referees to crack down on dissent among players, particularly when it comes to waving imaginary yellow cards. A series of incidents in the Premier League has brought this issue to the forefront, including a situation where referee Simon Hooper did not caution Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie for gesturing for a card while already on a yellow during a game against Liverpool in September.

However, other top-flight players have not been as lucky, with Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister receiving a yellow card for waving his arms in an attempt to get his opponent booked during the opening weekend match against Chelsea. Webb emphasized the importance of consistently enforcing this policy and praised the success of stamping down on abuse aimed at officials.

Additionally, Webb urged VAR to take more responsibility and intervene when soft penalties are clearly wrong, citing a recent incident involving Newcastle and Wolves. He stressed that VAR should be reserved for situations where a clear error has occurred on the field and called for more thorough review of controversial decisions.
