Join us on Nov. 21 for the 111th Thanksgiving Day game between the Portland and Deering high school football teams as they battle it out for a holiday tradition. The game starts at 10 a.m., and tickets are available for $5 for adults and $3 for students, seniors, and veterans. Portland Public Schools students can attend for free with their student ID, and tickets can be purchased at the gate or online.
After an impressive Class A North regional championship season, Portland (10-1) is gearing up to face Deering. First-year head coach Sean Green is hopeful that this Thanksgiving game will provide a positive experience for his players and coaches as they recover from their loss in the state championship game against Thornton Academy.
Deering, with a record of 4-5 this season, has shown strength and resilience under first-year coach Brendan Scully. They made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Portland leads the overall series, with the Bulldogs winning seven of the last nine meetings.
Following the game, players will be awarded the Merv Kilgore Award to Deering’s outstanding player, the Vinnie Allen Award to Portland’s outstanding player, and the James A Banks Unsung Hero Award to one player from either team.
Additionally, it will be Scully’s first Thanksgiving game as a head coach. The Bulldogs’ victory with first-year coach Brendan Scully is an exciting opportunity to witness history in the making.
The tradition of the Deering-Portland Thanksgiving Day game has been alive since 1911 with only a few exceptions. This game comes with a lot of anticipation and excitement. Get ready to join us on the field for yet another memorable Thanksgiving Day football showdown. Don’t miss out on this thrilling event, as it’s a unique opportunity to experience the spirit of rivalry and sportsmanship.
