Petoskey golf advances to D2 state finals; Charlevoix, East Jordan move on in D4

ST. JOHNS — Misery loves company.

When it comes to golf during this time of year, misery can be found thanks to the challenging conditions. However, the Petoskey girls’ golf team embraced the cold and windy temperatures at The Emerald in St. Johns during their Division 2 regional tournament.

“It’s always a challenge to adjust to the weather,” said Petoskey coach Chad Loe. “Playing under those conditions requires players to overcome more challenges. What should have been a par-4 hole became a long par-4 and had to be played like a par-5.”

Petoskey sophomore Riley Barr finished third within their Division 2 regional Tuesday with a round of 88 in some tough conditons.

Fortunately, the Petoskey team had the opportunity to practice at The Emerald prior to the tournament. Their familiarity with the course helped them secure a second-place finish and advance to the state finals.

Despite the challenging weather, the day ended in celebration. Petoskey coach Chad Loe praised his team’s perseverance, mentioning that Emma Berg birdied the final hole.

Midland High claimed the regional championship, with Petoskey finishing in second place and St. Johns in third.

The top three teams from each regional tournament, along with three individual qualifiers not on a qualifying team, advance to the state championships.

In the individual standings, Midland’s Lauren Deckrow claimed the top spot with an 82. Petoskey’s Riley Barry finished third with an 88.

Petoskey senior Sophia Gardner helped the team move on to the Division 2 state finals Tuesday, carding an even 100 to place 13th overall.

Petoskey coach Chad Loe commended the team’s performance, highlighting Riley Barry’s impressive play. Charlevoix and East Jordan also secured qualification for the state championships in the Division 4 regional rounds at The Quest Golf Course in Houghton Lake. Traverse City St. Francis claimed the overall title.

The Division 4 state championships will be held at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek on October 20-21.
