Paul DeJong Signs Major League Deal with White Sox: Agreement Confirmed

November 27: According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, DeJong is locked in for $1.75MM, with an additional $250K in potential incentives (X link).

November 21: The White Sox are reportedly set to sign free agent shortstop Paul DeJong to a major league contract, pending a physical. While the financial details are not disclosed, the agreement is expected to be for a one-year deal. DeJong is represented by the C.L. Rocks Corporation.

DeJong, 30, is a calculated gamble for the Sox due to his recent struggles. His promising start with the Cardinals in 2017, including 25 home runs in his first 108 major league games, was followed by declining performance. Despite the Cardinals’ six-year, $26MM extension, DeJong’s wRC+ dropped year by year. However, he seemed to show signs of improvement in 2023 with an increased home run count and a wRC+ of 94. Yet, his brief stint with the Blue Jays was a disaster, leading to his release.

The White Sox parted ways with Tim Anderson after a difficult 2023 season and are seeking a short-term, defensively skilled veteran to bridge the gap until prospect Colson Montgomery is ready. DeJong, with his solid defense and previous offensive potential, fits the requirements, making him a suitable stopgap solution for the team.

Although Montgomery is considered an elite prospect, DeJong may serve as a placeholder until the young talent is ready to step in. With uncertainties at second base as well, DeJong’s performance and the terms of his contract could dictate his future with the team.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post first reported the White Sox and DeJong were nearing a major league deal. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com confirmed the deal, which was later specified to be a one-year contract by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
