Padres’ Blake Snell wins NL Cy Young Award

Major League Baseball has announced the winner of the National League Cy Young Award, and the results may come as no surprise to fans and analysts alike.

Blake Snell, an outstanding pitcher for the San Diego Padres, emerged as the victorious recipient of the NL Cy Young, triumphing over other talented finalists such as Zac Gallen of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Logan Webb of the San Francisco Giants.

Despite the stiff competition, Snell managed to secure an overwhelming victory. Among the 30 Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) voters, Snell garnered an impressive 28 first-place votes, effectively overshadowing his rivals. Webb, who secured the second spot, and Gallen, who came in third, each received a single first-place vote.

Snell’s exceptional performance was exemplified by leading all MLB qualified pitchers in ERA at an impressive 2.25, making him the sole starting pitcher with an ERA below 2.50. Additionally, he allowed the fewest average hits per nine innings, demonstrating his defensive prowess. Despite pitching only 180 innings over 31 starts and maintaining an average of 5.6 innings per start, his dominance in conventional stats such as ERA ultimately won over the voters. While he may not pitch deep into games, when he does take the mound, he consistently delivers outstanding results.

Notably, this marks Snell’s second Cy Young award, with his first win in 2018 in the American League when he was with the Tampa Bay Rays.
