“One of the nicest guys,” caddie recounts Jim Nantz narrating golf shots at Pebble Beach

American sportscaster Jim Nantz on the 18th hole during the conclusion of the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament at Pebble Beach Golf Links. The conclusion was delayed due to weather and darkness.

Famed sportscaster Jim Nantz offered golfers playing Pebble Beach a legendary opportunity, offering to provide play-by-play for a group of golfers teeing off on the famously short seventh hole, a 109-yard Par 3.

The video was posted to the cameraman Jason Deaver’s TikTok account, @jdprogolf. Deaver is currently attempting to become a professional golfer and holds a +2 handicap. The video was taken about a month and a half ago during Deaver’s first visit to Pebble Beach, where the group he was caddying for received VIP treatment.

What was Jim Nantz doing at Pebble Beach?

According to Deaver, Nantz was “showing the course to his friends from out of town” when he spontaneously decided to provide play-by-play commentary for the golfers on the seventh tee. No one asked him to do it; it was purely Nantz’s idea.

“He said to me, ‘Why don’t you pull out your phone real quick? I want to do something,'” recalled Deaver. “It became an unforgettable moment for everyone present. Under that kind of pressure, I’m not sure I could have hit the green myself.”

Who was the golfer in the video?

The golfer who hit the green was David Lorenz, who happened to be in Deaver’s group. Nantz provided background commentary for multiple people in the group, but he went into full broadcaster mode for David’s tee shot, which turned out to be the best shot of the day. According to Deaver, none of the other shots from the group made it onto the green.

“I would say that was one of Lorenz’s best shots of the day,” Deaver stated. “He had about two or three birdies that day, so he didn’t play terrible golf. But that shot was definitely the highlight of his golfing life.” Deaver added, “He felt like he was on top of the world. It was an unbelievable moment for him.”

Despite the fact that Lorenz had the best shot, Deaver mentioned that it was impossible to be upset after that incredible interaction. “After an experience like that, nothing else can ruin your day,” Deaver said.

Does Deaver know Nantz?

While Deaver wouldn’t consider himself a friend or acquaintance of Nantz, he revealed that they had met a few times before. “He’s a great guy,” Deaver said. “One of the nicest people you could ever meet.”

Nantz’s children play junior golf with Deaver’s college golf coach, which is how they’ve crossed paths. “I’ve seen him before, and he’s always been a really kind person. He always takes the time to have a conversation with you, even when he doesn’t have to,” Deaver explained.

A priceless experience with Nantz

A round of golf at Pebble Beach costs around $600 per tee time, plus additional fees for a caddy or cart. This raises the question, how much more would people be willing to pay to have Jim Nantz narrate their entire round?

“I don’t know if I’d pay a whole lot,” admitted Deaver. “It would be an amazing experience, but right now, my money goes towards tournament golf. However, I think there are definitely people who would pay thousands of dollars to make it happen. I believe some people would pay thousands just to hit that one shot.”

Fortunately, Deaver, Lorenz, and their group got the opportunity to experience Nantz’s commentary for free, thanks to Nantz’s incredibly generous gesture.
