His basketball and clothing exploits have taken him to places like Madrid and the Met Gala, but also less vibrant pit stops on the NBA calendar like the Little Caesars Arena. (That’s in Detroit.) Before he embarks on year six on Wednesday against the Bulls, the NBA’s most stylish man shared some travel insight.
What are the things you absolutely have to bring when you’re packing for a road trip?
I always make sure to pack headphones, a toiletry bag with skincare products to prevent razor bumps, lotion, chapstick, toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. I’m serious about dental hygiene! I also bring my durag to sleep in and keep my hair clean. And, of course, snacks like candy or fruit are a must-have on the road.
What are your favorite candies?
I’m a big fan of Skittles, Starburst, and anything sour. I love the sour taste!
If you forget to pack these items, does it ruin the whole trip?
It’s so important to me that I never forget them! I actually have a checklist that I go through before leaving the house.
Oh, and for the outfit I’m going to wear to the next game, I take it out and steam it to make sure it’s not wrinkled. But everything else stays inside the bag.
I have a logistical question about the game day outfit. The one you wear to the game that gets photographed in the tunnel—does it just stay in your locker during the game and then you wear the same outfit postgame? Or do you bring two different outfits?
I actually wear the same outfit postgame.
So when you’re planning your outfits for a road trip, do you consider the weather forecast in those cities? Are you being tactical or is it mainly about looking good?
Most of the time, it’s tactical. I take into account the weather, the significance of the game, the media attention it will receive, and even the vibe of the city. If it’s a lively or outdoor city, I usually go for more exciting and vibrant outfits. So yes, weather and cities play a big role in my outfit choices.
A Wednesday game in Utah calls for a different outfit than a Saturday game in New York.
Absolutely!
Do you have a favorite tunnel outfit from your career?
One of my favorites is the Canadian tuxedo, cowboy boots, and a cowboy belt that I wore to the first play-in game last year against New Orleans.
