Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton is demanding an apology from the NCAA, despite it being highly unlikely. Boynton expressed his frustration after Kansas, a school implicated in the FBI’s 2017 investigation into college basketball recruiting, escaped severe penalties, unlike Oklahoma State, which was banned from the 2022 NCAA tournament.

“My message was always, with what they are saying now, is that they did the wrong thing to us,” Boynton said Wednesday at the Big 12 media day, . “My only issue at this point is I still haven’t heard anybody call and say, ‘You know what? We screwed up.’ Accountability is a big deal to me. It’s something I preach in our program every day.

“If somebody would call and just say, ‘You know what, Coach? I get it. We did the wrong thing. That shouldn’t have happened. We can’t change it but I want you to at least know we acknowledge that.’ Because that’s all that can be done at this point.”

Oklahoma State was one of the schools implicated in the FBI’s investigation into college basketball recruiting in 2017. The NCAA punished Oklahoma State by imposing a postseason ban, which was enforced during the 2021-22 season after the school’s appeal was denied. Despite other schools also being implicated, such as LSU, Louisville, Arizona, and NC State, Oklahoma State was the only one to receive a postseason ban or significant penalty.

In contrast, Kansas initially faced severe violations, but the NCAA’s Independent Accountability Resolution Process downgraded the charges and placed the program on probation. Kansas opted to challenge the NCAA’s charges throughout the process, unlike Oklahoma State.

Although Boynton believes the NCAA’s decision regarding Kansas is unfair, he does not want the Jayhawks to face harsher penalties. He argues that the players on their team should not be banned from the postseason, just as the players at LSU and Arizona weren’t punished. Boynton considers Oklahoma State’s postseason ban to be an unfortunate consequence.

The Cowboys, under Boynton’s leadership for the seventh season, will begin their season on November 6 against Abilene Christian. Last season, they finished with a 10-16 record and secured seventh place in the Big 12 standings.
