The Edmonton Oilers’ recent coaching change marks the first of the season. After breaking a four-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Kraken, head coach Jay Woodcroft and assistant coach Dave Manson were relieved of their duties. Kris Knolbauch, who has coached Connor McDavid in the past, has been named the new head coach while legendary Oilers defenseman Paul Coffey will join as an assistant.
The Oilers’ harrowing 3-9-1 record puts them at the bottom of the league. Despite their lackluster performance, it’s challenging to solely blame Woodcroft for their poor start. Edmonton has been plagued by poor goaltending, with Stuart Skinner and Jack Campbell combining for a league-worst .864 save percentage.
After signing a five-year, $25-million deal, the Oilers waived Jack Campbell, who has a dismal .873 save percentage. Additionally, Stuart Skinner has an even worse .861 save percentage and a league-worst -7.8 Goals Saved Above Expected, according to MoneyPuck.com.
Connor McDavid, with 10 points in 11 games, has also struggled lately, largely due to an injury sustained in a collision with Winnipeg Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey on Oct 21. Since returning, McDavid has only recorded two points in six games.
Woodcroft becomes the fourth coach to be fired during the McDavid era, joining Dave Tippett, Ken Hitchcock, and Todd McLellan.
