Ohio State to Redshirt Transfer Lorenzo Styles Jr. from Notre Dame
Lorenzo Styles Jr., who transferred from Notre Dame this past summer, will be redshirted by Ohio State. Styles, who previously played as a wide receiver, is transitioning to the cornerback position. He has appeared in three games on special teams and is eligible to play in one more in order to qualify for a redshirt season.
“If there was an emergency, we would put him in the game. Other than that, we’re holding this year for him to learn the position and improve. He will play in four games and then maintain the redshirt status,” said Buckeyes coach Ryan Day.
The decision to switch positions came shortly before Styles entered the NCAA transfer portal in April. Styles had a successful career as a receiver at Notre Dame, but expressed that he felt more natural playing on the defensive side of the ball. He played both positions in high school and was a highly regarded recruit.
The decision to redshirt Styles will allow him to preserve his eligibility for future seasons as he adjusts to his new position in the secondary.
The Buckeyes have experienced players at the top of their cornerback depth chart this season, with Denzel Burke, a returning starter, and Davison Igbinosun, a transfer from Mississippi who started as a freshman for the Rebels last year.
Lorenzo Styles Jr. is the older brother of Sonny Styles, a sophomore safety. Their father, Lorenzo Sr., was a linebacker for the Buckeyes from 1992-94 before playing six seasons in the NFL, including winning Super Bowl XXXIV with the St. Louis Rams.
