Eugenie Bouchard recently shared an amusing anecdote on social media involving customs officers who mistook her for Novak Djokovic, the famous tennis player.
Since her participation in the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open with a wild card in mid-September, Bouchard hasn’t competed in any tournament. She managed to reach the second round by defeating Renata Zarazua (6-1, 7-6), but was ultimately eliminated by the 7th seed, Veronika Kudermetova.
Known for her active presence on social media, Bouchard took to Twitter to share a brief story about an incident at an airport. She recounted how when she mentioned that she was a tennis player to the customs officers in Germany, they mentioned Novak Djokovic. Bouchard humorously replied, “Yes sir, just like that.”
Fans were quick to react to this situation, highlighting Bouchard’s achievements such as reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros, as well as being a finalist at Wimbledon in 2014 – the same year Djokovic won his 7th Grand Slam at Wimbledon.
Bouchard received comments from fans, some of whom wrote, “‘We were both finalists at Wimbledon 2014!’” and “I never thought that Djokovic would transcend Federer and Nadal but it’s lovely to see.”
Bouchard is excited to participate in the upcoming tennis tournament in Spain. A fan inquired if she had been to Sevilla before, to which Bouchard replied positively.
Currently ranked as the world No. 265, Bouchard will represent Canada in the Billie Jean King Cup starting on November 7th in Sevilla. Leading the Canadian team will be Leylah Fernandez, the world No. 36 at just 21 years old. The team will also include Rebecca Marino, Gabriela Dabrowski, and the talented 18-year-old Marina Stakusic.
