Wednesday marked a significant milestone for New York Islanders winger Cal Clutterbuck, as he hit the ice for his 1,000th NHL game.
“I never thought this would be possible,” he told reporters. “When I was growing up, even one NHL game seemed like a pipe dream. I never imagined reaching 1,000. I just kept moving forward, and now, it’s crazy for me, for sure.”
Drafted by the Wild in 2006, Clutterbuck spent six seasons in Minnesota before he was traded to the Islanders in 2013. His relentless physical style of play quickly endeared him to his new team and its fans, earning him the role of alternate captain after just one season.
Despite battling injuries, Clutterbuck has been a reliable force on the ice, currently holding the NHL record for hits with 3,798. After 11 seasons with the Islanders, he expressed gratitude for sharing this milestone with the team and its loyal fans.
With family and friends in attendance at UBS Arena, Clutterbuck received a standing ovation and a video tribute during the second period in honor of his achievement. He then helped the Islanders secure a much-needed 3-2 win over the Flyers.
As the Islanders continue to navigate a challenging season, Clutterbuck remains a consistent player and hopes that their recent two-game winning streak is a sign of better things to come.
“We weren’t perfect, but we defended a lead and secured a home win in regulation,” said Clutterbuck. “It’s a step in the right direction, and we need to continue building on it. If we keep playing this way, things will turn around.”
