SCITUATE — Two years ago, the boys and girls soccer teams at Norwell High achieved an incredible feat by winning state championships back-to-back in state finals at Medway High. Improbably, the Clippers have done it yet again, partying like it was 2021.
In a big way, the year 2021 was the repeat of this unexpected victory. The boys’ team led Saturday’s double-local Division 3 doubleheader, with senior back Joshua Kue setting up the tying goal with a long free kick in the second half then winning it in walk-off fashion in a penalty kick shootout against a tough Pembroke team at blustery Scituate High.
No. 3 seed Norwell (20-2-2) won the shootout 5-4 after the teams played to a 1-1 draw through 80 minutes of regulation and a pair of 15-minute sudden-death overtime periods.
The girls had slightly less drama but an equally joyous outcome, beating defending state champ Hanover, 1-0, on sophomore Anja Johnson’s goal with 23 minutes remaining. Norwell, the fourth seed, finishes 23-1-1, avenging its lone loss of the season — 1-0 to Hanover way back on Sept. 8.
Norwell girls coach, Kara Connerty, called it a “fairy tale” day, while senior goalkeeper Belle Pettit expressed her gratitude by saying: “It’s crazy. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and for us to do it twice with the boys and for me to be on the team both times, it’s surreal.”
