Northwestern’s Epic Victory Over No. 1 Purdue Led by Buie’s Big Performance

Evanston, Illinois — Northwestern pulled off a stunning victory over No. 1 Purdue in the Big Ten opener, winning 92-88 in overtime. Boo Buie led the way with 31 points, including seven in overtime, along with nine assists and four rebounds. In a thrilling game, Ty Berry also shined in overtime with seven points and 21 overall, while Ryan Langborg added 20 points.

The Wildcats’ win marked the second straight season they have defeated Purdue, making them the seventh program since 2010-11 to accomplish such a feat. Their first victory against a top-ranked team came last season, with a 64-58 win over the Boilermakers on Feb. 12.

Zach Edey put on an impressive performance for Purdue with 35 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocked shots, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Buie’s heroics for Northwestern.

Following the intense final moments of the game, Edey and his team left the court defeated while Northwestern fans celebrated with a court storming at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Buie’s two foul shots with 2:09 remaining in overtime put Northwestern in the lead for good. The Wildcats capitalized on a key turnover and free throws from Buie and Berry to secure the victory.

Fletcher Loyer contributed 17 points for Purdue, and Braden Smith posted 12 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds. Despite Purdue’s 52-27 advantage in rebounds and 31-for-41 performance at the line, Northwestern emerged victorious.

Buie’s impressive play helped Northwestern mount a comeback and take the lead, but the game remained tightly contested throughout regulation. Edey’s late heroics sent the game into overtime, where Northwestern ultimately secured the win.

Purdue held a 40-32 lead at halftime, but Northwestern’s resilience and determination led to their thrilling victory in overtime.
