Northwestern State cancels football season, head coach resigns following shooting death of player

In response to the tragic shooting death of Northwestern State University defensive back Ronnie Caldwell, the university made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of its football season and announced the retirement of head coach Brad Laird. The university expressed concern for the mental health and well-being of its student-athletes following Caldwell’s death on October 12.

NSU President Dr. Marcus Jones stated, “Ronnie was a beloved member of our community, and we miss him dearly. While our initial instinct was to resume playing, we have since realized the deep pain that our team is experiencing. It is in the best interest of our players, coaches, and staff to take this time to mourn, heal, and support Ronnie’s family.”

Coach Brad Laird also made the personal decision to step down after six seasons, citing the emotional burden caused by Caldwell’s death. Laird expressed that the players had become like family to him, and losing Ronnie was like losing a son. He stated his love for the program and the university, expressing his confidence in their ability to overcome this tragedy and move forward with their competitive spirit.
