Crews have already begun preparations for next year’s NASCAR All-Star Race at the iconic North Wilkesboro Speedway after the 2023 NASCAR season concluded in Phoenix. The 42-year-old track surface is being resurfaced for the first time since 1981, with a special asphalt mixture being added in the same configuration as the original track, maintaining the unique 13 degrees of banking in the corners.
Steve Swift, senior vice president of operations and development for Speedway Motorsports, noted the rarity of a racetrack running on a 40-year-old surface and praised the quality of the original asphalt. The resurfacing aims to recreate the racing conditions of the pre-patching era when cars raced two-wide and three-wide, now with uniform grip across the track thanks to the new surface.
Utilizing a special asphalt mixture that is expected to age faster than traditional asphalt, Speedway Motorsports hopes to create a more “worn-in” surface quickly, which typically leads to better racing. Celebrating the heritage of the old track, Speedway Children’s Charities plans to offer portions of the previous surface as keepsakes for fans, with proceeds benefitting Wilkes County nonprofits.
Ahead of the 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race on May 17-19, NASCAR’s best will take their first laps on the all-new surface. Tickets for the event, as well as for the companion CARS Tour event, are already available for purchase. Additionally, NASCAR Cup and CRAFTSMAN Truck Series practice and qualifying sessions, NASCAR All-Star Open, NASCAR All-Star Race, and Tyson 250 CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race tickets, along with back-to-back nights of CARS Tour action on May 14-15, are on sale.
