The NHL trade deadline is still more than three months away, but that hasn’t stopped general managers from making deals to improve their teams. A trio of trades went down in the last week alone, and there are plenty of players available on the market. The Athletic’s 2023-24 Big Board by Chris Johnston is now out, showcasing 23 of the biggest names that could change teams prior to the March 8 trade deadline. The list includes three goalies — Jake Allen, Kaapo Kähkönen, and James Reimer — and with the way the first quarter of the season has gone, there could be even more movement than that in the crease.

There are several teams in desperate need of an upgrade in the crease. In some cases, it’s due to injuries. In others, it’s due to underperformance by the current goalies. Here are four teams to watch as the goalie trade market develops, and which potentially available netminders might be the best fit for each:

For the Edmonton Oilers, the goalie situation is far from comfortable despite a recent winning streak. Should they add a veteran with experience in high-pressure situations to help steady the ship behind Skinner, candidates include Allen and Reimer, both of whom are available on Johnston’s big board.

Meanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes, known for making unconventional moves, could benefit from adding San Jose’s Kähkönen to their roster. The 27-year-old has shown improved technique and would be a good fit in Carolina.

As for the Colorado Avalanche, who will be without backup Pavel Francouz for the rest of the season, Allen and Reimer are strong options. Reimer has consistently produced above-average numbers, making him an attractive choice for the Avalanche.

Finally, the New Jersey Devils, currently struggling in net, could potentially make a move for Anaheim’s John Gibson. Gibson, who has shown signs of elite-level play this season, could be a game-changer for the Devils if the Ducks are willing to make a deal.
