With the NFL trade deadline rapidly approaching, Jerry Jones made significant comments on Tuesday regarding the potential involvement of the Dallas Cowboys.
When initially questioned during his weekly radio interview about the likelihood of the Cowboys making any moves, Jones managed expectations.
“It will have to come our way,” he stated on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “I don’t want to rule it out completely, but it usually does.”
Jones proceeded to elaborate on how executing a deal during this time of year “primarily begins on the other end.”
“This doesn’t mean we lack aggressiveness,” he added. “It simply means that’s where negotiations start. I am satisfied with our current personnel and don’t believe there is a need to upgrade our roster.”
However, true to Jones’ style, a later response during the same interview on a similar topic had a slightly different tone.
“Right now, I would consider making improvements to our team, which gives you an idea,” he explained. “Because I believe we have a team that can contend. Would I make a move that sacrifices the present for the future? Possibly not.”
Essentially, Jones expressed a desire to enhance the roster and indicated a hesitancy to trade away current players in exchange for future draft picks.
Considering the Cowboys’ roster and their current record after seven weeks (4-2), it would be logical to augment the team in areas of need. Moreover, considering the highly competitive nature of the NFC and the fact that it has been 27 years since the Cowboys last played in the Super Bowl, it would be prudent to take additional risks and add something that could push them over the top in January.
Although it is more probable to make a smaller move akin to the Hankins trade rather than a larger one like the Cooper trade, for the purpose of this story, we will focus on the marquee names. The players who could potentially make the Cowboys reflect back in January and say, “That move helped us reach new heights.”
These five individuals perfectly fit that criteria.
