Newly signed CB Alex Austin details special connections to Patriots

When it comes to injuries in the New England Patriots’ secondary this season, they’ve been hit pretty hard. Therefore, it wasn’t surprising that they filled the open roster spot left by injured wide receiver Kendrick Bourne’s recent torn ACL with an upcoming stint on injured reserve.

Patriots have now signed cornerback Alex Austin, a former seventh-round draft pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2023. Austin recently played for the Houston Texans’ practice squad, appearing in three games this season without accumulating any stats. However, the Texans released him on Wednesday.

What makes Austin even more intriguing is his special connection to the Patriots. He considers Willie McGinest, a family friend and a star linebacker for the Patriots from 1994 to 2005 who won three Super Bowl titles with the team, as his uncle.

“It’s an indescribable feeling to know that my uncle played in this same locker room, wore the same uniforms, and achieved so much success,” Austin expressed to reporters on Thursday. “Being here and having the chance to contribute to winning big games is truly surreal.”

Austin also emphasized that McGinest has been there for him since childhood, acting as a mentor who taught him the ropes and helped shape him into a professional athlete.

In addition to his connection with McGinest, Austin shares a childhood bond with Patriots cornerback Jack Jones from their time growing up together in Long Beach, Calif.

Austin comes in as a valuable addition to the Patriots’ cornerback depth chart, joining the ranks of Jones, Jonathan Jones, J.C. Jackson, Myles Bryant, and Shaun Wade. Christian Gonzalez, a rookie cornerback, is likely out for the season with a shoulder injury.

Austin may have the opportunity to make his debut this Sunday when the Patriots face the Washington Commanders at Gillette Stadium. The game is set to kickoff at 1 p.m. ET.
