Newcastle United is considering recalling Yankuba Minteh from his loan spell at Feyenoord due to the impressive impact he has made in the Netherlands.
The 19-year-old winger arrived from Danish club Odense for a fee of around £7 million in the summer but was immediately loaned out to gain valuable first-team experience under highly-rated manager Arne Slot.
However, conversations are underway regarding whether the youngster should return to Tyneside due to Newcastle’s extensive injury problems this season, leaving manager Eddie Howe without several key players.
While Newcastle did not initially include a recall option in the loan contract with Feyenoord, staff are currently deliberating whether it would be best to keep the teenager at his current club or request a return.
Although Feyenoord is not obligated to agree to the recall request, the relationship between the clubs is positive, and there is hope for a compromise.
Minteh, who has recently recovered from a hamstring injury, has made 10 appearances for Feyenoord, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
Despite the expected return of winger Harvey Barnes, Newcastle’s squad continues to be stretched due to injuries and the added pressure of European competition.
If the Magpies progress into either the Champions League or the Europa League, it is likely that Newcastle would have to recall Minteh due to their limited spending power and the need to sign a replacement for Sandro Tonali, who is serving a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules.
The main priority for Newcastle in January is to sign a replacement for Tonali, with discussions centered around Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, although it remains to be seen whether City would allow Phillips to join Newcastle on loan.
Despite this, no final decision will be made on any transfer targets until after the hectic December schedule that has left several players unavailable.
