Newcastle issue update on Sandro Tonali amid investigation into illegal betting activity

Sandro Tonali is under investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation for alleged involvement in illegal football betting activities.

The talented midfielder from Newcastle, Sandro Tonali, is currently cooperating with both the police and the Italian football authorities. In the event of a guilty verdict, Tonali could face a substantial ban from the sport.

After news broke regarding the ongoing inquiry, Sandro Tonali was removed from the Italian squad set to face Malta and England. It is reported that he admitted to betting on AC Milan matches during an official hearing with the Italian Football Federation in Turin on Tuesday.

Tonali’s agent revealed that the player is battling a problematic gambling addiction and expressed gratitude towards Newcastle for their unwavering support. The agent stated, “Sandro is facing a critical battle against his gambling addiction. I believe that he will overcome this challenge as well. This experience could potentially save his life and that of others who find themselves falling into the same destructive habit.”

These recent events have caused concern throughout football, as another player, Nicolo Fagiolo from Juventus, received a ban of 12 months (with five months suspended) after admitting to breaching betting regulations. Nicolo Zaniolo, a winger from Aston Villa, is also currently facing an investigation and has been removed from the Italian squad as a consequence. In Italy, illegal betting on matches carries a maximum penalty of a three-year ban.

As of now, Newcastle is yet to confirm Tonali’s availability for selection in the upcoming matches against Crystal Palace and Borussia Dortmund.

In the summer, Sandro Tonali became the most expensive Italian footballer in history after Newcastle acquired him from AC Milan for a fee of £55 million. He made an impressive debut by scoring against Aston Villa and has since made 10 appearances for Eddie Howe’s team.
