In a stunning turnaround, the New York Liberty fought back from their previous losses in the first two games of the WNBA Finals. After being defeated by a total of 45 points, the Liberty secured a critical 87-73 victory in Game 3, keeping their championship dreams alive and improving to 2-1 in the best-of-five series.

According to New York coach Sandy Brondello, the team was able to rediscover their identity and demonstrate their true potential. Brondello expressed her pride in the team’s effort, commitment, and cohesion, but emphasized the need to replicate their success in the upcoming games.

Player Jonquel Jones highlighted the importance of playing with pride and heart, knowing that the fans and the city of New York were behind them. This win marked the Liberty’s first victory in the WNBA Finals since 1999 and their first appearance since 2002. The game also set a new attendance record for a WNBA Finals game, with 17,143 fans in attendance.

On the other hand, the Las Vegas Aces struggled on the road at Barclays Center, losing all three games. The series will continue with Game 4 taking place on Wednesday in Brooklyn at 8 p.m. ET.

In the history of the WNBA playoffs, teams that have taken a 2-0 lead in best-of-five series have always gone on to win. This trend is particularly significant in the Finals, where seven out of nine instances have resulted in sweeps. Notably, Las Vegas faced a non-sweep last year and this year against the Connecticut Sun and now against New York.

During Sunday’s game, Aces point guard Chelsea Gray, the MVP of last year’s Finals, suffered a foot injury and did not return. Coach Becky Hammon did not provide an update on her status.

Jonquel Jones delivered an MVP-worthy performance, contributing 27 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. She also played a pivotal role in defending two-time league MVP A’ja Wilson, who struggled with her shooting. Jones expressed her energy and determination to seize the new opportunity and play with passion.

New York head coach Brondello praised Jones, describing her as a superstar and the most consistent player on the team. Game 3 showcased a reversal of roles compared to the previous games, with the Liberty shooting at 52.4% and holding the Aces to only 33.3%. The Liberty dominated in the paint and excelled in transition, securing a significant advantage.

Coach Hammon admitted that her team was outplayed and lacked effort, particularly in the early stages of the game. On the contrary, Jones believed that the game was fun because the team played with intensity and commitment.

The Liberty displayed a strong start in the second half, effectively shutting down the Aces’ offense and blocking their shots in the third quarter. Despite a late surge from Las Vegas, New York closed the game with a 15-6 run, solidifying their victory.

In addition to Jones, Breanna Stewart, the 2023 MVP, contributed 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Liberty. The team’s guards, including Courtney Vandersloot and Sabrina Ionescu, showcased improved performances, with Ionescu providing three 3-pointers and 11 assists.

Meanwhile, Kelsey Plum led the Aces with 29 points, keeping them competitive throughout the game.
