Myles Colvin, Fletcher Loyer spark Purdue basketball win over Xavier

WEST LAFAYETTE − The first two games revealed Purdue basketball’s flaws, but the lesser opponents made them appear less significant.

Against Xavier, the Boilermakers knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game.

However, second-ranked Purdue managed to secure an 83-70 victory against Xavier in a packed Mackey Arena during the Gavitt Games contest, despite not being perfect.

The game was ignited by freshman Myles Colvin and sophomore Fletcher Loyer, as Purdue absorbed Xavier’s best offensive efforts.

Colvin’s two corner 3s, including a buzzer-beater, represented the turning point in the first half, propelling the Boilers (3-0) to a 37-29 halftime lead.

It was over when

Colvin once again proved his worth by making a crucial three-pointer when Xavier seemed to gain momentum towards the end of the game.

Although a Zach Edey dunk interrupted Xavier’s flow, Colvin’s 3-pointer from the right wing with 6:22 to go reinstated Purdue’s comfortable lead.

Colvin ended the game with nine points on a flawless 3-point shot record.
