Moratti reveals why he sacked Gian Piero Gaperini at Inter

Former Nerazzurri President Massimo Moratti has no regrets about sacking Gian Piero Gasperini as Inter Milan coach in 2011.

The former Inter President spoke to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, explaining the reasons behind Gasperini’s departure.

Inter will face a familiar face on the opposition bench when they play against Atalanta this evening.

Gasperini had a very brief spell as Inter coach over a decade ago.

The Italian took charge in the summer of 2011, following an impressive time as Genoa coach.

Gasperini’s reputation was at its peak when he started coaching the Nerazzurri.

However, it turned out to be a disaster for Gasperini at Inter, as he was sacked after just five matches.

Gasperini has since rebuilt his reputation

He had another successful spell as Genoa coach and, since 2016, has been leading Atalanta to regular European qualification.

Given Gasperini’s undeniable quality, there are questions as to why things went so wrong for him at San Siro.

Moratti On Gasperini’s Sacking From Inter

“Sometimes in life, there are pairings that don’t deliver the desired results,” reflected former Inter President Moratti.

“I have no regrets about the decision to sack Gasperini in 2011,” he continued.

“If anything, I’m disappointed that Gasperini couldn’t demonstrate his current abilities during his time at Inter.”

When asked if the problem was tactical, Moratti doesn’t believe that to be the case.

“The problem was that he never won a match. Talking about formations becomes futile at a certain point.”

Regarding the upcoming match, Moratti predicted, “It’s the right time for both teams.”

“Most likely, one of the teams will have to break their strong defensive record,” he added.

“It’s no secret that Inter is the stronger team on paper. However, this is always a challenging match.”
