Missouri Football: Mizzou vs Florida Q and A with Jackson Reyes from The Alligator

Mizzou’s quest for a New Year’s Six Bowl spot continues as they take on the Florida Gators tomorrow night on Senior Night at Faurot Field. We examine the matchup with insights from Jackson Reyes of The Alligator. This game is critical for the Missouri Tigers (8-2, 4-2 SEC) as they aim to secure their ninth win of the season and keep their NY6 bowl hopes alive. The Florida Gators (5-5, 3-4 SEC) are facing a challenging season, and we delve into the team’s expectations and challenges with Jackson Reyes. Here’s a glimpse into our conversation to get you geared up for the game:
Sammy Stava: With a 5-5 record, how disappointing has this season been for the Gators, especially after consecutive 6-7 seasons? What were the expectations for this season, and how precarious is head coach Billy Napier’s position right now?
Jackson Reyes: Preseason expectations weren’t too high for Billy Napier in year two. Although the program showed potential at 5-2, the recent three-game losing streak has been a letdown. A 6-6 or 7-5 finish initially seemed plausible, but the possibility of a 5-7 finish is now looming. However, I don’t think Napier is on the hot seat just yet.
SS: Florida’s struggles haven’t stemmed from Wisconsin transfer quarterback Graham Mertz. How would you rate his performance leading up to this point?
JR: I’d give Mertz a “B” so far. He’s exceeded expectations and shown good ball security. While he hasn’t been aggressive in passing, he’s had a solid season. If the Gators want to make it to a bowl game, he needs to maintain his consistent play.
SS: The sophomore running back Trevor Etienne had a stellar performance last week. Do you believe he has the potential to replicate that success against Mizzou’s strong defensive line unit?
JR: Etienne could still flourish against Mizzou. When healthy, he has excelled against formidable opponents, and he has the capability to make an impact against any defensive line.
SS: Besides Mertz and Etienne, who are some key names to watch on Florida’s offense? Who has stood out on the defensive side?
JR: Receivers Ricky Pearsall and Eugene “Tre” Wilson have been outstanding. On defense, Princely Umanmielen and Jordan Castell have made a significant impact this season.
SS: Florida is striving for bowl eligibility. How crucial is this for the fan base and the program? Is motivation a concern after three consecutive losses?
JR: Making a bowl game is important for the fan base, despite the recent disappointing results. A bowl game would help maintain the program’s relevance and attract future recruits. While motivation may be an issue, the team is still determined to secure a bowl game spot.
SS: Missouri is currently an 11.5-point favorite. How do you foresee this game unfolding, and what’s your final score prediction?
JR: Florida may keep it close for a while, but ultimately, Mizzou’s offensive firepower could lead them to victory. I anticipate a hard-fought battle, with Mizzou ultimately prevailing. My prediction: Mizzou 33, Florida 24.

A big thank you to Jackson for his insights and a great conversation. Be sure to follow him and The Alligator for more Florida coverage leading up to the game.
