Michigan State Basketball’s A.J. Hoggard Prepared for Big Ten Play: Injury Update

Michigan State’s coach, Tom Izzo, had a somber expression and paused before speaking out about senior point guard A.J. Hoggard’s performance. The Spartans had just secured a resounding 86-55 win at Breslin Center, and the question was about Hoggard adjusting to coming off the bench.

Izzo was reaching for the “next level” from Hoggard, a few other veterans, and Michigan State basketball. He made it clear that he’s been trying to bring out the best in Hoggard, from feigned anger to pampering. But the results led him to exploring “a different approach.” Expressing exasperation along with hints of support, Izzo reiterated, “He’s gotta play a lot better than he’s been playing, and I think he can.”

He then suddenly shifted to assert that the benching wasn’t meant to humiliate Hoggard. Instead, he revealed an overarching concern about the performance of Hoggard, as well as other guards and senior players. He refused to accept the malaise and showed concern about Hoggard and other senior players’ inconsistent performances. Referring to Hoggard’s mental state as “senioritis,” Izzo was firm about the need for improvement.

During Tuesday’s win, Hoggard reflected last year’s benching and hoped that turning things around this time would springboard him to “good things.” Izzo shared similar thoughts, expressing hope that the benching might, once again, galvanize Hoggard.

The Spartans (4-3) are particularly keen on A.J. Hoggard’s form, especially with Big Ten openers on the horizon. Izzo is aware that they need Hoggard to play at his peak to “be as good” as he believes they can be. Post-game, Hoggard was open about the differing perspective he gained from watching the game from the bench. He welcomed the notion of seeing “what he (Hoggard) didn’t see” from a different vantage point and finding alternative solutions.

Izzo left nothing unsaid about his mission to help Hoggard succeed. “It’s my job…to do him a favor, and that’s make him a great player. Because he’s better than he’s playing,” Izzo expressed adamantly.
