The Mets are making moves this offseason. Following the signing of former Yankees hurler Luis Severino, the Mets have now reached an agreement with utility man Joey Wendle.
SNY’s Andy Martino has confirmed the deal, pending a physical, with reports indicating a one-year, $2 million contract plus performance bonuses.
With the Mets opting not to retain Luis Guillorme, the addition of Wendle provides depth to the roster. Wendle has a history of contributing to successful teams, starting his career with the Oakland Athletics before officially debuting in 2018 with the Tampa Bay Rays.
In his rookie season, Wendle posted impressive stats, finishing fourth in AL Rookie of the Year voting with a .300/.354/.435 slash line, along with seven home runs and 61 RBIs in 139 games. Although his performance dipped in the following years, Wendle bounced back in 2021, earning his first All-Star selection with an impressive .265/.319/.422 slash line, 11 home runs, and 54 RBIs.
Following his time with the Rays, Wendle spent two seasons with the Miami Marlins, where he faced challenges but continued to showcase his versatility. He has played 200 games at second, third, and shortstop, along with 18 career games in left and right field, making him a valuable asset for any team.
