The Illinois high school football season is culminating with the state championships at Illinois State University in Normal this weekend. In a first-ever move, we introduce the 2023 Journal Star all-area teams during this event, selecting the top offensive and defensive players for this year’s high school football season. Among these players is Kainon McQueary, all-state running back from Washington, who has been named player of the year for his outstanding performances.
McQueary has carried his team to the Class 6A state semifinals with impressive statistics, rushing 1,873 yards and scoring 30 touchdowns. Joining him on the first team is Lane Wheelwright, quarterback from Farmington, who gained 1,328 passing yards and 1,015 rushing yards. Additionally, Zeb Rashid and several other exceptional players complete the all-area first-team lineup.
The defense is just as competitive, featuring some of the best linemen and linebackers of the season such as Gary Rutherford III from Peoria High and Mack Sutter from Dunlap, among others who have shown remarkable skills and statistics.
