Nov. 26—2023 All-Area boys’ golf Coach of the Year: Mahomet-Seymour’s David Sebestik
Discover Why he Deserves the Title of Coach of the Year
David Sebestik expertly guided a talented Mahomet-Seymour team to a second-place finish at the Class 2A Centennial Regional, victory at the 2A Peoria Richwoods Sectional and secured a state tournament placement for the entire team. The Bulldogs clinched a seventh-place finish at the state tournament as a team, with Reis Claybrooke leading the way, tying for 16th individually. Looking back at the season, Sebestik reflects on the Bulldogs’ achievement:
“It was a standout season, one of the most successful since 2010. The team’s performance this year was reminiscent of that year when they won the state championship. Reis Claybrooke and Leif Olson were a dominant duo, much like the stars of 2010. Our consistent 78-82 strokes players, including Kelton Hennessy, created a sense of deja vu. This year felt like 2010, with a similar scoring and placement pattern.”
What sets this season apart for you?
“While many dwell on our state appearance, we also triumphed at the (Champaign County) and sectionals. We secured victories in several other competitions throughout the year, a rare feat in itself. Our overall record of 140-14 included only seven losses to Class 2A teams and we aim to build on this success with four returning players.”
How do you balance coaching with family commitments?
“Being a golf professional at Lake of the Woods is rewarding but time-consuming, especially for events, leagues, and outings. Spending weekends and holidays at the golf course, rather than playing, requires a sacrifice of family time. However, I reserve Saturdays for family activities to strengthen my bond with my kids, who I get to know over the years through various programs. It’s challenging but worth it.”
How significant is Mahomet-Seymour’s recent golf success for you?
“As a Mahomet native, coaching where I once played and having experienced a disjointed coaching experience myself, I strive to provide stability for the next generation. Serving as a mentor and golf advisor from January to October gives me the opportunity to foster important interpersonal skills and instill confidence in my players.”
How central to your success is your wife, Samie, especially as you raise three young boys?
“My wife, Samie, is the pillar of support that enables me to fulfill my coaching duties. As she takes on the heavy load during my extended absences in August through October, her contribution is instrumental to my accomplishments.”
