These days, it only takes a small spark to ignite the golf rumor mill.
Such was the case last week when Jon Rahm’s sudden departure from TGL’s inaugural season sparked speculation about his potential move to LIV Golf.
After fans noticed that Rahm’s presence had been removed from TGL’s website, Rahm took to social media to clarify that he would not be participating in the new technology-infused golf league backed by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and the PGA Tour.
“I am sad to confirm that I will not be participating in the first TGL season,” Rahm wrote. “While I still think it’s a great opportunity, right now it would require a level of commitment that I can’t offer.”
The TGL released a statement expressing their understanding of Rahm’s decision and conveying their respect for his choice.
Despite his previous statements affirming his loyalty to the PGA Tour, rumors began to circulate on social media that Rahm’s exit from TGL indicated a potential departure from the PGA Tour as well. Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee even labeled Rahm as a potential defector, although he acknowledged the unlikelihood of such a move.
Rory McIlroy, however, dismissed these rumors, stating that he had spoken with Rahm and would be “very, very surprised” if he were to leave the PGA Tour.
