49ers injury update: McCaffrey’s MRI encouraging; Deebo day to day originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

SANTA CLARA — Coach Kyle Shanahan expressed optimism after receiving the results of running back Christian McCaffrey’s MRI, stating that they were encouraging.

“I thought it was,” Shanahan said on Thursday regarding McCaffrey’s condition. “Anybody who’s day to day, means they have a chance.”

The San Francisco 49ers confirmed that McCaffrey’s injury is an oblique strain, specifically affecting his outer abdominal muscles. Notably, the 49ers have removed “ribs” from McCaffrey’s injury report.

McCaffrey, wide receiver Deebo Samuel (shoulder), and left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) were not included in Thursday’s practice session, according to Shanahan. They are all considered day-to-day.

The 49ers are set to face the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night, and Shanahan remains hopeful that McCaffrey, Samuel, and Williams will be available for the game.

McCaffrey, who currently leads the NFL in rushing yards with 530, was unable to play in the fourth quarter of the 49ers’ 19-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday due to his injury.

Samuel sustained a left shoulder injury on the first play of the game against the Browns. Despite playing eight more snaps, he was ultimately ruled out of the game.

Williams injured his left ankle during the first half, briefly leaving the field but later returning to play. After the game, he was seen wearing an orthopedic boot.

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw and left guard Aaron Banks will also not be participating in practice. Greenlaw missed the Week 6 game against the Browns due to a hamstring injury, causing the 49ers’ run defense to struggle.
