HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS – When Alexandra Gazzoli hit the ball, everyone’s attention turned to the sound it produced – a thundering noise that most golfers only dream about. Partnered with Ryan Donaldson, her fellow Suwannee player, Gazzoli blew past her competitors, landing her ball well past the two others in her group. Her performance at the recent Class 2A state championships solidified her intention to play college golf at Florida State University.
Gazzoli qualified for the state tournament each year of her high school career and ranked third in her freshman year, was runner-up in her sophomore year, and clinched the individual title in her junior year. While handed a final 1-over-par 143, placing her in fourth, she missed out on capturing the title once again.
Nonetheless, she gracefully accepted her placement, expressing her gratitude at being able to represent Matanzas. She shone in her first round last week, scoring a 1-under-par 70, followed by 2-over-par 73 in the second round. Despite the steady performance, she missed the mark for the high school golf crown by a hairbreadth. Her performance tugged at the heartstrings of Matanzas coach Brandie Alred.
The once Matanzas star and current Florida State University golf team recruit closed the high school golf chapter of her life with a smile, a wave, and a confident stride onto the next stage. Following in her footsteps, fellow Seabreeze standout Amelia Cobb also bid farewell to high school golf. Cobb, who tied for 22nd in the tournament, is set to bring her talent to Florida Atlantic.
The competition saw Katherine Schaefer of American Heritage (Broward) claim victory, finishing with an impressive 2-under-par 140. She was followed by Nancy Cox of Ponte Vedra, tied with Sofia Rivera of Beachside, each at 1-under-par 141. Despite not clinching the trophy, Gazzoli left the course with her head held high, still recognized as one of the most talented players in high school golf.
