Veteran catcher Martin Maldonado has been a key fixture in the Astros lineup over the past few years. He initially joined the club as a backup option behind the plate during the 2018 and 2019 seasons before becoming the primary catcher from 2020 to 2023. However, at 37 years old, Maldonado is now a free agent for the first time since the 2019-20 offseason as the Astros plan to shift to Yainer Diaz as their primary catcher for the 2024 season.
Despite losing his starting role in Houston, Maldonado is generating interest in the open market. According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, “4-5 teams” have already inquired about signing the veteran this offseason. Notably, the Astros are also interested in reuniting with Maldonado, albeit in a reduced role in deference to Diaz.
Maldonado, a 27th-round pick by the Angels in the 2004 draft, has never been known for his offensive prowess. While he posted a 107 wRC+ during the shortened 2020 season, his offensive numbers have generally been below average throughout his career. However, Maldonado has consistently been recognized as one of the best defensive catchers in the game.
In 2023, Maldonado’s defensive performance declined significantly, particularly in terms of pitch framing and throwing arm strength. Despite these struggles, the Astros and other teams are still interested in Maldonado due to his reputation as a strong game-caller and mentor for young catchers.
Teams in need of a short-term catching solution could view Maldonado as an attractive option, especially those with young catchers who could benefit from his experience. Speculatively, the Brewers, Rays, Marlins, and White Sox are all in need of catching help this offseason, with the White Sox likely to focus on developing former Astro Korey Lee behind the plate in 2024.
