Receiver Martavis Bryant, a talented football player who had a promising future, unfortunately found himself on the wrong side of the substance-abuse policy. However, recently there has been a development as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has reinstated him. This official move took place on Saturday.
In 2014, Bryant was drafted by the Steelers as a fourth-round pick and played two seasons with them. However, in 2016, he faced a suspension for the entire season. After his return for the 2017 season, he was traded to the Raiders in 2018. Surprisingly, the Raiders released him in September, only to re-sign him just 10 days later, despite the fact that he was reportedly facing an indefinite suspension under the policy.
Unfortunately, his playing time was cut short in December due to a season-ending knee injury. It’s worth mentioning that Bryant and other players, such as Josh Gordon, who had been suspended for at least one year, seemed to fade into the background when the NFL and NFL Players Association effectively decriminalized marijuana and other non-PED drugs in their 2020 labor deal. However, the reasons behind the delay in Bryant’s reinstatement and the sudden decision to reinstate him now remain unclear.
Another aspect that remains unclear is whether there will be any interest from teams in signing Bryant. He will be turning 32 next month and hasn’t played a professional game since November 11, 2018.
Prior to his NFL career, Bryant also played for the Vegas Vipers of the XFL in 2013. However, his performance was underwhelming as he only managed to catch 14 passes for 154 yards in eight games.
