ABU DHABI – Johnny Walker expresses frustration with Magomed Ankalaev for his lack of promotional efforts for their upcoming fight.
Walker (21-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) and Ankalaev (18-1-1 MMA, 9-1-1 UFC) are set to face off in a crucial light heavyweight battle as part of UFC 294’s main card at Etihad Arena. The highly anticipated main card will be available for pay-per-view viewing at a special time of 2 p.m. ET following preliminary fights on ESPN+.
While acknowledging Ankalaev’s impressive skill set, Walker believes that his opponent should focus on improving his self-promotion.
“People need to take notice of him,” Walker expressed during Wednesday’s media day. “He’s very reserved and doesn’t talk much. He just needs to display more emotion and do something to make people eager to watch him fight. He’s already a talented fighter, but he needs a stronger personality to promote himself. It’s for his own benefit.”
With a three-fight winning streak under his belt, Walker hopes that a victory over Ankalaev will secure him a shot at the title.
“He’s an incredibly dangerous fighter,” Walker stated. “A tough Russian, ranked No. 2 in the world. What more can you say? He’s the second most formidable contender in the division. He’s extremely tough, and if someone manages to defeat him, that person will be prepared for the next title shot.”
After facing criticism for his split draw against Jan Blachowicz at UFC 282, Ankalaev promised to demonstrate a greater sense of urgency in future bouts. However, Walker doubts that Ankalaev will significantly alter his fighting style.
“No matter what happens, he always reverts back to the same style he’s comfortable with,” Walker remarked. “If it doesn’t work, he always goes back to his old ways. So, we’ll see. I’m excited because I can adapt my style.
“I’m an unconventional fighter. I approach fights differently than anyone else. I have my own unique style, so I can modify it. I’m not sure if he’s capable of doing the same. But if he does attempt it and encounters difficulties, he’ll always fall back on what’s familiar.”
