The San Francisco 49ers have acquired pass rusher Chase Young through a trade, bolstering their defensive line. However, they are also anticipating the return of several players who have been sidelined this season.
Currently, the 49ers have four players on injured reserve (IR): Samuel Womack III, Robert Beal Jr., Danny Gray, and Cameron Latu. Additionally, Darrell Luter Jr. remains on the physically unable to perform list.
With the exception of rookie tight end Latu, who suffered a meniscus injury during the preseason, all of these players have the potential to contribute to the team in the near future.
“I think we’re on the verge of we’ve got to make that decision,” said General Manager John Lynch. “Kyle [Shanahan] and I will have some conversations and obviously, with the council of our health and performance staff, but these guys are ready to have their windows open.
“But, you also have to have roster spots available. But, I do believe a couple, if not a few, are on the verge of having their windows open. At some point, we’ve got to see what they can provide us.”
While the addition of Young will help the team’s defense, the 49ers are also looking for coverage help from their existing roster. They have struggled to stop opposing offenses, especially in the three consecutive losses before their bye week.
Womack, a fifth-round draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, showed promise as a rookie, primarily on special teams. He recorded 19 tackles, one interception, two pass breakups, and contributed to turnovers. With the team looking to fill the nickel back role, Womack is expected to get an opportunity to showcase his skills.
Luter, who suffered a bone bruise during training camp, could provide depth in the secondary. The fifth-round pick from South Alabama may soon return to action as well.
Gray and Beal could also add depth to their respective positions, but the front office will face tough decisions in terms of roster spots.
