Luis Severino is eager to return to the mound following a truncated 2023 season due to an oblique injury. However, it seems unlikely that the Yankees will re-sign him.
Severino, an unrestricted free agent this winter, is back to throwing and “feeling good,” according to The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty. Reportedly, up to eight teams have expressed interest in signing Severino for the 2024 season, but the Yankees are not among them.
During the last season with the Yankees, Severino posted a 4-8 record and a career-high 6.65 ERA over 19 games (18 starts). His 1.65 WHIP was also a career-high, and his 79 strikeouts were his lowest since 2016.
Throughout his career with the Yankees, Severino has struggled with injuries. After a strong start in 2017, he reached his high-water mark the following year, with the next three seasons being plagued by multiple injuries.
Despite a solid 2022 season, Severino’s future with the Yankees is in doubt due to his poor performance and injuries.
The Yankees rotation currently features several pitchers, including Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, and newcomers Clarke Schmidt and potentially Michael King. Additionally, the Yankees are considering bringing back Frankie Montas, which means Severino may have to start fresh with a new team.

The Yankees are contemplating reuniting with free-agent right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas, according to Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of The New York Post.
Montas, who was acquired by the Yankees from the Athletics in 2022, struggled with shoulder injuries in the last season and a half.
Following the acquisition, he pitched just 39.2 innings over eight starts with a 6.35 ERA. He played in only one game in 2023 after undergoing shoulder surgery, which makes him likely to settle for a one-year deal for the 2024 season.
