Colombian forward Luis Diaz has expressed his deepening anguish over his father’s kidnapping and has made a plea for his release. Diaz recently made his first appearance for Liverpool since his parents were abducted, with his mother being released since then. He scored a late equalizer in the match against Luton Town and celebrated by displaying a shirt with the message ‘libertad para papa,’ which means ‘freedom for Papa.’
In a heartfelt statement, Diaz said, “Today, it is not the footballer speaking to you, but Lucho Diaz, the son of Luis Manuel Diaz. My dad, Mane, is a hardworking individual and the foundation of our family, and he has been kidnapped.
“I appeal to the ELN (National Liberation Army) to release my father promptly, and I implore international organizations to intervene for his freedom. Our anguish grows with each passing second and minute. My mother, my brothers, and I are desperate and overwhelmed, unable to find words to describe the emotions we are going through. The suffering will only cease once we have him back home.
“I beg you to release him immediately, respecting his well-being, and put an end to this agonizing waiting period as soon as possible. With love and compassion, we request that you reconsider your actions and allow us to reunite with him.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the Colombian people and the international community for their support. Thank you for the many demonstrations of affection and solidarity during this incredibly challenging time that numerous families in my country are experiencing.”
Diaz missed Liverpool’s previous two matches due to his father’s kidnapping. After being granted some leave, the Colombian player trained while anxiously hoping for positive developments. The Colombian government has stated that the National Liberation Army (ELN) is responsible for the kidnapping, and extensive efforts are being made to secure his release.
Following the draw at Kenilworth Road, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson praised Diaz’s character and inner strength, stating, “His goal speaks volumes about his character and resilience. It is difficult for most people to comprehend what he is going through. Although we are by his side, supporting him, we can feel his pain, but he experiences it on a different level.
“In dark times, football can sometimes bring joy to those who are struggling. We stand with him completely and are here for anything he needs. He attended the game, scored a magnificent goal that was incredibly significant, and we are fully behind him.”
