Longmeadow’s Ryan Downes repeats as Division I golf state champ

Ryan Downes successfully defended his title as the Division I golf individual champion on Tuesday, leading the field at his home course of GreatHorse in Hampden.

The senior from Longmeadow and future Vanderbilt University golfer finished the day with an impressive score of 68, four-under-par. His score was three strokes better than the second-place finisher, Ilan Rashdan from Westford Academy.

In Western Massachusetts, Downes was the only golfer to secure a spot in the Top 10. Reilly Fowles from Northampton had the next-best finish among the locals, tying for 12th place with a score of 77.

Saint John’s Shrewsbury claimed the team championship with a combined score of 303, just 15-over-par. The team’s golfers averaged a score of 75.75 on Tuesday’s course.

Representing Western Mass. on the team side of the competition were Longmeadow and Minnechaug. Longmeadow finished ninth with a score of 333, while Minnechaug placed 13th with a score of 345.
