Hopedale’s CJ Kivlehan and Other Local Golfers Brave Wet Conditions in Division 3 State Championship

Hopedale’s CJ Kivlehan showcased his golfing skills as he chipped onto the ninth green during the Division 3 state golf championship at Sterling National Country Club in Sterling. Despite the challenging weather conditions, local golfers from Central Mass. played their hearts out in an attempt to end their seasons and high school careers on a positive note.

Unfortunately, no individual from Central Mass. managed to capture the championship title, and no local team emerged victorious. The wet conditions persisted throughout the day, causing elevated scores and adding to the difficulties players faced. Ayer-Shirley, with a perfect 15-0 record in the regular season and a successful run in the state sectionals, fought hard but were unable to secure a win.

Sohil Patel, a senior and Ayer-Shirley’s No. 1 hitter, expressed his disappointment about the outcome of the match. Despite the challenging conditions, Patel remains passionate about golf and plans to continue playing in college. Whether he receives a scholarship or walks-on to a team, he is determined to never stop playing the game.

Ayer-Shirley was well represented by other players such as Reid Ohanesian, Aadi Patel, Tommy Bergin, Jason Turner, and Tyler Crawford.

Colin Haynes from Hopedale, a freshman and the team’s No. 2 hitter behind Lucas Levasseur, performed admirably in the adverse weather. Haynes shot an impressive 81 and expressed his satisfaction with the results. He emphasized the importance of strong tee shots and hopes to continue improving his game in the future.

Clinton sophomore Thomas Bates embraced the learning experience and made the most out of his round at the tournament. Despite encountering some rough patches, Bates was able to recover and deliver a decent effort. He appreciated the opportunity to compete against talented players and learn from their techniques.

Overall, though the weather conditions were less than ideal, local golfers exhibited resilience and determination throughout the Division 3 state championship. Despite not achieving their desired results, they showed passion for the game and a commitment to improving their skills.
