Ray Houghton, a former Liverpool star, is adding his insights about the team’s midfield for the current season. He is confident that the recent adjustments have resulted in a more vibrant play in that area of the pitch. “The changes that the manager made were the right ones, to bring in younger, fresher players,” he expressed in an interview with BBC Radio Merseyside.
“Liverpool are an outstanding team because they’ve got so many options in forward positions. They’ve got an abundance of talent that most other teams have not got when it comes to scoring goals and being creators as well,” Houghton added.
Speaking specifically about players, Houghton said: “The likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister have fitted in and Alexis will be even better when he pushes a bit further up the pitch.”
Furthermore, Houghton praised Mac Allister’s awareness and vision, mentioning that he can score goals and contribute to creation. He sees potential for improvement in Mac Allister if he is given a more advanced role on the field.
Given the upcoming match against league leaders Manchester City, Houghton believes that Liverpool is prepared to excel at Etihad Stadium. “If you look at their form at the back end of the season, I think their last defeat in the league was at Manchester City,” he said. “So since then the form was really good for the remaining fixtures.”
