UFC contender Ian Machado Garry revealed that he has been banned from training at Leon Edwards‘s gym, Team Renegade. This occurred after Edwards and his coach expressed concerns over “doubts and insecurities” within the team.
The unbeaten Machado Garry, who is set to face teammate Vicente Luque in December, shared that he has trained at various gyms worldwide but will not be able to return to Renegade per Edwards’ request. Despite this, he spoke highly of Ash Begg and Tom Breese, who run the gym.
Machado Garry stated, “Gym conflict has been a major issue lately. Leon Edwards and his head coach asked me not to come back to Renegade and told me I’m not allowed to train there. I want to clarify that Ash and Tom, who run Renegade, have been great. The issue is not with them.”
He continued, “Leon and his coach have a problem with me training on the mats and have asked me to stay away. They don’t want any insecurities or doubts on their own mats within the gym. I don’t fully understand this. I might be seen as a threat, but I’m not fighting for the title right now. His coach said, ‘Ian is a threat, and I cannot have Leon having any doubts or insecurities.'”
Machado Garry expressed his frustration, wondering why gym conflicts arise. He believes that having an elite fighter like him training on the mats would be beneficial for everyone. He stated, “It’s irritating because I want to be the best in the world and train with the best. Renegade is the top gym in the UK. I went there to learn from the guys around Birmingham, not specifically to train with Leon.”
Machado Garry emphasized that he has good relationships with the staff at Renegade and didn’t expect this conflict. He concludes, “So, when we talk about conflict, that’s it. There’s a story for you to write, for sure!”
The Independent has reached out to Edwards, Lovell, and Team Renegade for comment.
Machado Garry’s last fight was in August, where he defeated Neil Magny. His next bout will be against teammate Luque at UFC 296 in December. Meanwhile, Edwards is set to headline UFC 296, defending his welterweight title against Colby Covington.
Watch UFC 296 live on TNT Sports in the UK and Ireland, on Saturday 16 December.
