Cal State Northridge gashed the Cardinal’s interior defense, scoring 58 points in the paint, but faltered when the game was on the line, missing their final four shots and being outscored 19-6 at the foul line.

In their first game under coach Andy Newman, Cal State Northridge took an early 15-4 lead to take a seven-point lead. They upped the margin to 21-13 at the 12:20 mark thanks to Dionte Bostick’s short jumper.

Stanford fought back, tying the score at 24 and 26, but the Matadors persisted in attacking and converting their shots. They consistently made it into the paint, scoring 30 points there in the first half and maintaining a narrow lead up until the final four minutes.

At that point, the Cardinal finally put together the spurt they had been looking for throughout the half. They strung together stops and rattled off 10 straight points for a 43-35 advantage, settling for a 43-38 edge at the break.
