Last-minute cancellation: FA Cup second-round match called off moments before start

Alfreton Town’s FA Cup second-round tie with Walsall was canceled due to adverse weather conditions and a frozen pitch just moments before the scheduled start. It was also meant to air on BBC One but had to be called off due to safety concerns.

The National League North club, Alfreton, had high hopes of reaching the third round for the first time in history, and the game will be rescheduled for a later date.

The match officials and supporters had tried hard to prepare the ground, but referee Sam Allison made the decision to cancel the game due to the dangerous playing conditions.

While the decision was booed by home supporters, it was widely agreed that player safety had to be the priority and the right choice was made in the end.

Despite some differing opinions, the freezing temperatures have already caused the cancellation of various football matches in the UK, with the ground being unsuitable for play.
