Real Madrid‘s victory over rivals FC Barcelona in El Clasico was marred by apparent racist chanting, aimed at Vinicius Jr towards the end of the match.
The Brazilian has frequently been targeted by supporters of other clubs over the past few years, with numerous cases being filed by LaLiga to the national prosecutor.
Real Madrid came from behind to defeat Barcelona with two Jude Bellingham goals, reclaiming the top spot in the table. However, it was the late substitution of Vinicius and the reaction from Barcelona fans that has sparked potential further action.
Prior to the match, videos circulated on social media showing Barcelona fans chanting “Vinicius, die.” After Vinicius was substituted by Carlo Ancelotti in stoppage time, he allegedly faced another wave of racist abuse as he slowly walked off and lifted his arms to the crowd.
“La Liga has been working to identify the individuals involved in making racist insults and will file relevant charges, as is always the case,” stated Spain’s top flight. “We are in direct contact with the police and FC Barcelona.”
Barcelona replied, saying, “We will always defend the values of football and sport, such as respect for the opponent, and we will investigate any racist insults that may have occurred during the match against Real Madrid.”
Vinicius’ team has not yet made an official comment on the matter.
Last week, Sevilla officials removed one supporter from the stadium for “xenophobic and racist behavior” during a match against Real Madrid, and a police report was filed.
LaLiga has requested greater powers to punish clubs where fans are found guilty of racist abuse, as they currently can only report incidents to the national authorities, who then conduct their own investigations.
Vinicius was chosen in June to lead Fifa’s new anti-racism committee, run by players advocating for more severe punishments for those found guilty of racist abuse.
