Tom Lee, the coach for Aquinas High School football, vividly recalls the moment when he first recognized the potential of a basketball player at his school. It was the summer before Walter Berns’ sophomore year, and Lee saw the lanky, athletic kid throwing down dunks at the Reinhart Athletic Complex.
According to Lee, “It was like his eyebrows were at the rim. I’m like, a dude who can jump like that can play.”
Walter Berns, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 185 pounds, has since evolved to become a key defensive back for the Blugolds (12-1), who are gearing up to face Wrightstown (11-2) in the WIAA Division 5 state championship at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison on Thursday.
One of Berns’ senior teammates, Tony Miller, described him as a “ball hawk,” emphasizing his exceptional ability to locate and intercept the ball. Berns has contributed significantly to the team’s success this season, excelling in both defense and offense.
Despite initially being a backup quarterback, Berns has showcased his versatility by making game-changing interceptions, recovering fumbles, and scoring touchdowns as a punt and kickoff returner. His all-around performance has been vital in the team’s 12-game winning streak.
Lee has praised Berns as the best defensive back he’s ever coached and commended his willingness to adapt to different roles for the benefit of the team. Ultimately, Berns’ exceptional athleticism and team-oriented mindset have had a profound impact on Aquinas’ success.
Despite focusing primarily on basketball, Berns, who excelled with impressive statistics during the previous winter season, has dedicated himself to becoming a better football player, setting individual goals and prioritizing the team’s defensive performance.
Furthermore, Berns’ defensive prowess has played a significant role in Aquinas’ success, contributing to the team’s ability to force turnovers. His coverage skills have paved the way for teammates to capitalize on opportunities, resulting in a formidable defensive strategy for Aquinas.
Berns’ journey from a talented basketball player to a standout football athlete reflects his dedication, adaptability, and commitment to contributing to the team’s overall success, both on and off the field.
