It wasn’t until the third game of the season that the winless San Jose Sharks finally experienced some luck, although it didn’t come from their own team.

In the late second period, defenseman Dmitry Orlov of the Hurricanes had his shot blocked, leading to a scramble for the puck along the boards. Carolina defenseman Tony DeAngelo attempted to join the pursuit but was unexpectedly halted and knocked to the ice after colliding with referee Graham Skilliter’s elbow.

DeAngelo took offense to the hit and started arguing with the official as he skated away. Despite receiving a warning from the official, DeAngelo continued to mouth off and ultimately received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. However, this penalty wasn’t enough to deter DeAngelo, who persisted in berating the officials and was ultimately given a 10-minute misconduct penalty at the end of the period.

Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour must have felt that the significant penalty was excessive, as DeAngelo did not return to the game after serving his 10-minute penalty. It’s a stretch to say that this decision directly contributed to Carolina’s victory over San Jose, but the Hurricanes did manage to score four goals while DeAngelo was off the ice, leading to a 6-3 win.

DeAngelo has developed a reputation for his poor behavior on and off the ice. In 2017, he received a three-game suspension for attempting to wrestle away from an official while playing for the Coyotes. He has also faced suspensions twice during his junior hockey career for using offensive language and abusing officials.

DeAngelo’s problematic behavior extends beyond hockey. Throughout 2020, he used his social media account to spread misinformation about COVID-19 and make false claims about the presidential election. He was also involved in a physical altercation with his teammate Alex Georgiev, resulting in his placement on waivers. It’s safe to say that DeAngelo’s penalties were well-deserved.
