Kris Knoblauch’s NHL experience consists of working with the forwards and running the power play under Hakstol from 2017-19. He also filled in as coach for the New York Rangers in 2020-21 and 2021-22, coming up from Hartford of the American Hockey League due to COVID-19 disruptions.
Former coach of the Seattle Kraken, Hakstol, describes Knoblauch as even-keeled with great communication skills, which the Oilers hope will benefit their team.
Jeff Jackson and Ken Holland, CEO of hockey operations and president & GM respectively, are eager for the Oilers to compete for the Stanley Cup. With the team struggling and in win-now mode with a 3-9-1 record, they couldn’t wait to bring Knoblauch on board.
It is important to note that the decision to bring in Knoblauch was not influenced by star player Connor McDavid, as clarified by Jackson, who used to be McDavid’s agent. Several of Jackson’s clients have played for Knoblauch in the past.
Knoblauch has a keen sense of the players’ abilities, empowering star players while also assigning roles and ensuring accountability for all team members. He is expected to fast-track his impact as the Oilers host the New York Islanders on Monday and the Kraken on Wednesday.
Despite the limited time to make an impact, Knoblauch’s well-thought-out plan and approach are set to be implemented as he takes over coaching duties for the Oilers.
